This is Anna Sobeshchanskaya, who was supposed to play the role of Odette in the premiere performance of Swan Lake.
From Wikipedia:
Sobeshchanskaya — for whom the original (1877) rôle of Odette was intended — was pulled from the première performance when a governing official in Moscow complained about her, stating that she had accepted several pieces of expensive jewelry from him, only to then marry a fellow danseur and sell the pieces for cash.
19th-century ballet was such a seedy scene.
By all accounts the first run of Swan Lake was a hot mess. Basically everything— every creative decision, every performance— everything sucked. Critics even hated on the score, calling it “too Wagnerian,” which, if you’re used to delicate Delibes and then suddenly hear the Grand Theme from Swan Lake, it’s understandable, even if it misses the point. (The point is this: Swan Lake is one of the g.o.a.t. ballet scores.)
So if you get the impression that Sobeshchanskaya might be saying “I’m with stupid” in this picture, you may not be wrong.
